The USC Asian Pacific Alumni Association will be holding a recognition ceremony at the group’s annual scholarship and awards gala on Friday, April 25, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. They will be honoring Japanese American Students-Nisei together with 25 scholars who have been impacted by the American-Japanese encounter during the World War II.
This gala will also serve as a fund-raising activity for the current and future USC students.

A Filipino activist, Ester Soriano, died at the age of 61 in Los Angeles. She was nationally recognized in mediation, worked for 37 years for the county and created its Dispute Resolution Program.
Soriano, a civil rights activist, worked as the jury foreperson in the civil damages trial of Rodney King. King, who was black, was beaten by several white officers in 1991. He filed a case against the county which results to a race riot the next year.
Complications after her surgery for liver cancer made Soriano surrender her life.

ATLANTA (UMNS)–The United Methodist Church’s new president, Rev. James Chongho Kim, has challenged pastors and lay leaders to launch 500 Korean-American churches in five years.
As per Kim, they have to “take advantage of a paradigm shift with which to see the church as a faith community and pioneer it in various ways.”

His absence seemingly affect the offense for the Houston Rockets. It makes way for the victory of Utah on Saturday with an ending score of 93-82. Yao is still facing a long recovery from a broken left foot, still far from getting back to the ball game.

An actor named Kalpesh Suresh, known for his screen name Kal Penn says that his ethnic background, being an American Indian, made it tougher for him in Hollywood. He played a role that swivels cultural displacement in the film The Namesake.
It has been tough to find a role written with a specific “look” in mind but Kal Penn thinks that the film helps unite ethnicity into the world we live.

Close to 3,500 attendees descended on San Antonio, Texas, for the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) Annual Convention, which was held March 26-29, 2008. In addition, almost 450 vendors participated in the much anticipated Trade Show, which is also part of the event.

Five Covenant ministers and administrators led workshops in the recent Asian American Leadership Conference and drew 350 participants from around the country. The Covenant is developing a good reputation among the Asian American community, and is raising up Asian American leaders within the denomination.
