Asian Heritage Month: Bronx’s Bangladeshi Community Proudly Grows

Bangladeshis has the largest Asian-born American, according to the survey the 5,600 Bangladeshi lives in Bronx and it went up at 1,600 in year 2000.

One man said that, the reason Bangladesh people are living in Bronx is that they are comfortable with the place, because rents are cheaper, hospitals are nearer as well as condominiums are a better place to stay.

Yielding the Floor

OCA-NY is proud to co-host the screening of “Yielding the Floor,” a short film that documents the thoughts views and experiences of some of our most prominent Asian and Pacific Islander American leaders in Congress. After more than a year of interviews conducted with six current and former members of Congress, the US Capitol Historical Society, whose mission it is to educate the public on the history and heritage of the US Capitol Building and all those who serve therin, retained the services of well-known producer, Samantha Cheng to interview and videotape these important leaders.

Samantha and her team, in coordination with U.S. Capitol Historical Society staff, compiled more than 10 hours of interviews with U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, U.S. Representative Mike Honda, U.S. Representative David Wu, U.S. Representative Doris Matsui, and former U.S. Representative and Cabinet Secretary Norman Mineta.

The U.S. Capitol Historical Society also worked with U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao who offered her commentary and perspectives on working in the U.S. Capitol and with members of Congress.

With corporate support from AT&T, Wal-Mart and IW Group, Samantha Cheng and the broadcast production team at IW Group, have compiled a short 30-minute video with personal observations, thoughts and comments from the six former and current members of Congress with additional insights and comments from U.S. Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans names winners of prestigious annual awards

Minnesotans Sri Lanka Foundation received an award for the good job they have done. One of the projects they had was the Boxing Day Tsunami Sri Lanka. The foundation is not just for recognizing the needs of the victims of tsunami, but to raise funds for them and help people find new living.

“If you can spread global language, English, in Sri Lanka, it will help build a relationship between the communities,” Lal said. “I think, in the long run, education is the key to solving this problem.”

Mr. Liyanapathiranange, Srilal or Lal is the CEO of the Minnesota Sri Lanka Friendship Foundation.

Glen Dale Couple On a Mission

An average of 30 doctors and nurses, headed by Dr. Vic Chin of Glen Dale and his wife, goes to their home country every year for a medical mission. The group performs goiter removal, cleft lip repair and Lasik surgery in the Philippines with assistance from the Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, the local Filipino-American Association of the Tri-State and the Filipino-American Doctors Association, a group of Filipino doctors from around the Mountain State.

Dr. Dale said to start this project since 1983. They found it more relaxing than tiring to help their fellow Filipinos.

A new wave of Asian Americans makes significant strides

Asian-American now invades the TV and Film industry; many of the Asian-American are now playing lead roles on television and movies. They are not doing the usual roles that most Asians do, like martial arts that Jackie Chan always does.

Before, they have been behind the lime light playing roles that are ethnic specific meaning roles that they just play, but not portray.

Recently, Hollywood did bring out the best in Asian-American people; they have done major roles in very popular movies like Charlie’s Angels and television programs like Grey’s Anatomy and Heroes. All of these just proved that Asian-American cannot only do commercials but they can be the main focus of the camera as well.

Possible hate crime in Windsor

Vandalism boils down to “hate crime”… KKK group was the one who burned down the property of an ethnic minority in Windsor. Hmong family was attacked by a group of white citizens that have burned their truck and written “KKK” on both sides.

This might not be done by kids who were just trying to vandal everywhere, because officers believe that this was planned by Ku Klux Klan which is the possible group to blame to.

Attack labeled a hate crime

From Virginia Tech to Lone Hill… School crimes in Los Angeles again…

An Asian man attacked by a 15-year old boy and a 20-year old boy with an unknown reason. The witnesses heard someone shouted. Police officers cannot prove if this was done by white supremacist group, but suspected that it happened, because of vandalism or threats to Asians.

The spokesman of LA Human Relations Commission depicted that this was not a usual case. They only have one record of a similar incident. They said that this should be given much attention and requires a lot of security.

“Person of interest” arrested in hate crime stabbing

Aaron Duggan, 27, of Bakersfield was suspected as the “person of interest” for a hate crime stabbing of a 22-year-old Asian man last Tuesday. Authorities arrested Dugan on a parole violation the next day.

After the said incident, another 15-year-old suspect from the San Gabriel Valley was arrested for stabbing.
The two residents of the area, one was described Asian and the other as a “White man”, was believed to be attacked using a knife. During the attack, the stabber was heard shouting racial epithets thus relating to it as a hate crime.
