New voices draw parallels in plight of illegal immigrants

Posted in Racism at 2:51 pm by william_lee_intern

SR march unites county Jewish, Asian communities with Latinos

A country-wide march whose aim is to bring awareness about the plight, causes and effects of Illegal immigration in the US happens today at downtown Santa Rosa.
The multi-racial march shows support for refugees and undocumented immigrants.

In opposition, there is a counter demonstration organized by the local chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. They are not against legal immigration; rather they are against “open border” policies that have allowed millions to enter the country illegally.
The pros are calling for immigration reform. This is to stop stereotyping of gang-related crimes among the immigrant youths. Current immigration laws affect not only the Latino community but the Asians as well.

The antis are crying foul over the double-standard with regards to cheap labor, tapping illegal immigrants as resources. They are screaming for the implementation of fair laws.

“Model minority” goes nutzoid

(excerpt below):

“Dark Matter,” the filmmaking debut of Chinese-born opera and theater director Chen Shi-zheng, gets full credit for slamming head-on into any number of hot-button topics in American society. First and most interestingly, Chen’s film captures, from the inside, the strange and insular world of the Chinese graduate students who increasingly dominate the math and science fields at major American universities. It also engages the subtle forms of racism and stereotyping that continue to inform non-Asians’ perceptions of this “model minority.” I guess this is a spoiler, but there’s no way around it: Finally, “Dark Matter” tries to convey how an underslept, overworked, culturally dislocated student could erupt in a psychotic outburst of violence, as has happened in a couple of notorious cases.

Chen’s film (written by Billy Shebar, from a story he co-wrote with Chen) is based on a shooting incident at the University of Iowa in 1991, and was completed well before the Virginia Tech shootings in April 2007. Neither the movie nor the Iowa case bears any resemblance to the Virginia Tech case, in which the shooter was an undergraduate English major and a longtime legal resident of the United States, not a foreign student. (If you don’t want to know more about the plot of “Dark Matter,” don’t read news accounts of the Iowa case, as the fictional events follow the real ones closely.)

“Dark Matter” is rich with interesting themes and ideas, from the slippery, sycophantic nature of academic success to the Orientalist attitudes of rich Americans and the outer edges of astrophysical theory.

Asian American students confront stereotypes

Posted in Racism at 9:57 am by william_lee_intern

Lisa Chan and other members of the Asian American Student Association set up a display in the Union Food Court on March 25 (Tuesday) to raise awareness about historical and contemporary examples of racism and stereotypes used against Asian Americans. The presentation is part of this year’s Asian American Awareness week. According to Chan, the display is not only about political correctness, but also to help students understand why stereotypes and racism have existed and how education can help overcome them.

21 Movie: Boycott this movie or buy it in Chinatown

Posted in Activism and Empowerment, Media and Entertainment, Racism, Genocide at 10:10 am by jj_de_la_cruz

Producers William S. Beasley, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, Ryan Kavanaugh, Brett Ratner, Kevin Spacey are all racists for casting white people (Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth) in lead roles to portray people who were Asians in real life.

If you pay money to see this movie, you will be sending the message that you support producers’ decisions to deny employment to Asian-American actors based on their race.

What if Coach Carter was portrayed by Tom Hanks, American Gangster Frank Lucas portrayed by Tom Cruise, or if Brad Pitt portrayed Chris Gardner in Pursuit of Happyness?

Join the Boycott 21 group!

The main characters of “Bringing Down the House” are Jeff Ma and Mike Aponte, former real-life MIT students who are both Asian-American men. According to the author, most of the actual blackjack team was composed of Asian males. Not only were Asian-American actors unsuitable for the leading roles in this flick: British actor Jim Sturgess had to be imported all the way from the UK to portray the role of Jeff Ma!

Please help boycott this film and tell Hollywood that it’s okay to portray Asian-American men in lead roles as three-dimensional human beings with personalities, feelings, and a sense of humor. You know. Regular people. Is that too much to ask for? Vote no on 21.

The producers of this movie claim that they are not racists, and that casting white people as leads is a decision motivated only by profit, even though the real-life characters were Asian.

Antebellum plantation owners were motivated by profit also, and they used slaves to achieve their goals. Pretty evil isn’t it?
