Now, a booming China is hosting the 2008 Olympics and is sending the Olympic torch to San Francisco. Many Chinese Americans are upset about the demonstrations planned by thousands of Tibetans, Burmese, Falun Gong believers, and others to protest China’s human rights record.

Riders may pay cost of traffic fee’s defeat

As Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver decided the bill was so unpopular that even holding a vote was pointless on April 7, mayor Bloomberg’s congestion pricing dream finally ended.New York may have lost $354 million in federal funds yesterday, but U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters has already been looking for greener pastures.

Asian-American becomes highest ranking LAPD officer

Terry S. Hara is being promoted from commander to deputy chief and is slated to head the West Bureau operations section which makes him the highest ranking Asian- American in Los Angeles Police Department history today. The promotion ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on the Athletic Field at the Los Angeles Police Academy, 1880 N. Academy Drive, in Elysian Park and hundreds of officers and city officials are expected to attend it.

An Asian American Viewpoint On China, Tibet and the Olympics

San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors could not help but join the fray about Tibet by calling for a boycott of the 2008 Olympics opening ceremonies and by protesting the passage of the ceremonial Olympic torch through San Francisco on April 9. These actions feed an undercurrent of anti-Chinese sentiment that all too often spills over onto Chinese Americans and, more generally, against all Asian Americans.

Korean, Japanese Foreign Ministers Meet Today

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yu Myung-hwan began his four-day trip to Japan Thursday to discuss closer ties with Japan. He will meet with his Japanese counterpart Masahiko Komura today on ways to boost bilateral cooperation in economy, international security and the nuclear problem with North Korea. The two ministers will also discuss details on the upcoming summit between President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda slated for April 20-21.

West Side Breakfast Feels Like 2009 Preview

Many politicians who are running for office in 2009, flocked to the New York Historical Society for a few moments at the microphone during the Council of Orthodox Jewish Organizations of the West Side’s legislative breakfast on March 30.The president of the Bronx, Adolfo Carrion and several other declared and likely candidates for comptroller, including City Council member John Liu attended the breakfast.

Asian-American Women Dip Their Toes into U.S. Politics

According to the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), only two of the 86 women serving in the 110th U.S. Congress are Asian Americans; only 30 of the 1,741 women state legislators serving nationwide are Asian-American women. To help Asian-American women learn about the basics of U.S. governments and politics, CAWP launched in 2007 a one-day program called Rising Stars, aimed primarily at women living in New Jersey. Nowadays, Asian-American women are really JUMPING INTO POLITICS.

Tang: The United States should help Iraqis by doing what it does well — resettling refugees

MAYOR NEWSOM COMMISSIONS APPOINTMENTS March 26 2008

Congestion pricing nearing a vote

Congestion pricing advocates are making their final efforts to persuade city and state lawmakers to support a congestion pricing plan that would decrease traffic in Manhattan’s central business district as well as raise money for mass transportation projects.The plan is controversial and is opposed by people from Queens and Brooklyn who drive into the city and would be hurt the most.
