New York Worker’s Rights Clinic for Non-English Speakers

Councilman John C. Liu announced an upcoming clinic on worker’s rights in collaboration with the Urban Justice Center. The clinic will offer one-on-one sessions to consult with attorneys on issues ranging from unpaid wages to unfair treatment. It will take place on Monday, March 31, at the office of Councilman Liu in Flushing, Queens. Language interpretation will be provided in Spanish, Korean and Chinese.

American Cancer Society to address needs of Asians

The American Cancer Society’s Asian Initiatives Unit will host a community health fair on March 29 at the Bowne Street Community Church, 143-11 Roosevelt Avenue, Flushing, NY 11354 to help promote cancer prevention and early detection in the Asian community. The health fair will provide attendees with the opportunity to obtain cancer and other health information and to get free blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol testing as well as complimentary mammograms, pap smears, and oral cancer screenings to meet the needs of the Asian Community.

UIC Raises Awareness of High Rates of Asian Suicide

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicides account for a higher percentage of deaths in Asians than in whites, blacks, and Hispanics. For raising awareness of the high rate of suicide in the Asian community, nursing faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing hope to prevent deaths by giving healthcare professionals tools to intervene.

FIL-AM DOCTOR TO GET U.S. EXCELLENCE AWARD

A Filipino doctor whose name is Christopher M. Guerrero spearheads yearly medical outreach projects in far flung and depressed areas of the country. He will be one of 50 medical practitioners in the United States who will receive the prestigious American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award. Dr. Christopher M. Guerrero will be the first Filipino-American to receive the award, considered the equivalent of the US medical excellence award. Since 1997, Guerrero has been leading medical missions in his province and in other parts of the country, saying this is his way of giving back to his countrymen.
