After the College Cost Reduction and Access Act was signed into law in September, colleges and universities can now apply for federal money to plan, develop, undertake and carry out programs to improve and expand their capacities to serve Asian American students.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is gearing up an ambitious program to offer Mandarin Chinese language and culture courses at all of its middle and high schools.The plan calls for the courses to be offered at about 200 middle and high schools. It’s a very practical measure, as China is the No.1 trade partner of the U.S.

The Asian and Asian-American communities met at a forum on March 31 to discuss a resolution that the Student Assembly passed in November for an Asian community center on campus. The forum began with a round of applause as Siv Somchanhmacong grad, opened the meeting. He presented information about the growing number of Asians enrolled at Cornell and noted that there is no greater time to discuss these issues because of this increase.

Early education is especially important for learning a language and combining a language-learning program with daily exposure to foreign language media increases the chances that a child will acquire language proficiency. However, few schools integrate second-language education into preschool or elementary education. Therefore, parents should look for a program with well-trained teachers and some sort of assessment of acquiring a language. “Ni Hao, Kai-Lan” which airs at 11 a.m. weekdays on Nick Jr. is considered as a good second language learning tool.

Department of Education plan to lease 35 existing buildings citywide to turn into schools to relieve overcrowding and provide new facilities. Community Board 7 unanimously passed a resolution calling on the state senate to amend S.6393 to pass a new school site bill.

Emory hosted the 22nd annual Korean American Students Conference from March 13 to 16. The conference aims to encourage its attendees to explore a broad spectrum of career opportunities and to pursue their passions without being afraid of breaking away from traditional career. Most of the attendees thought that the conference was impressive.

The northwest San Fernando Valley is home to at least 50,000 Koreans. It has signs in two languages and businesses that cater to the community.
There are about 1.4 million Koreans and Korean Americans live in the United States,As the Korean population has grown, mini-Korea towns have sprung up throughout Southern California in Hacienda Heights, Cerritos, Buena Park, Fullerton — and the northwest Valley ,the San Fernando Valley Korean Business Directory lists nearly 1,500 Korean-owned businesses in the area, including acupuncturists, liquor stores and doughnut shops. Koreans consider education their top priority Historically, some of the highest-achieving schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District have been in the West Valley, and that performance is fueled in part by Korean families’ focus on education
