Liu, John C.
NYC Council Member John C. Liu
Council Member John C. Liu was elected to NYC Council in 2001. John Liu has focused on empowering taxpayers, reforming our covernment institutions, and holding public officials accountable. Liu has sponsored laws to protect children from lead paint, providing a living wage for working families, penalizing predatory lenders, reforming our waste management system, increasing affordable housing, and increasing the safety of New York City streets and sidewalks.
These are only a few examples of the vast positive influence he has had on New York City.
In addition to all of this, John C. Liu has consistently spoken up for the Asian American community. He has proudly stood up to many corporations and individuals who would otherwise have been able to attack the Asian American community without having to face any repercussions whatsoever.
Queens, New York - Asian Hate Crime Incident
- On August 12, 2006, two white men attacked a group of Asian American teens while hurling racial epithets at them.
Councilman Liu immediately stood up for these victims:
- “A hate crime against one is a hate crime against all and perpetrated by the most cowardly as evidenced by the fact that today’s defendant was not even man enough to say sorry as he was hauled away to prison.”
- The two white men were prosecuted. One of them was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. The other took a plea deal to take a lesser punishment.
The View (A Barbara Walters Production) - Ching Chong Incident
On December 7, 2006, Rosie O’Donnell did a caricature of the Chinese Language on a popular TV show called “The View. This insult to the Asian American community is significant because O’Donnell said this on a TV show that has national syndication that has real credentials because it is a Barbara Walters production. - Councilman Liu immediately responded to this by writing this letter to Barbara Walters
- Councilman Liu also did an interview with Sino TV to explain why this must be addressed. Listen to a brief clip of this interview here
CW11 News Broadcast - Anti-Chinese News Story Incident
- On January 29, 2007, CW11 broadcasted a news story which played on negative stereotypes about Chinese restaurants. This extremely irresponsible broadcast was aired based on an alleged claim– a claim which, to this day, has never been backed by a single shred of evidence.
- In doing this, CW11 has caused all Chinese food restaurants in New York City to be adversely affected.
- Councilman Liu led a protest rally in front of CW11 on February 4, 2007.
- Councilman Liu directly confronted the CW11 reporter, Chris Glorioso, during the rally
These are but a few examples– there are many more. John Liu continues to stand up for Asian Americans, and regularly goes outside of his district in Queens to defend the Asian American community at large.
