Nowadays, there are many Asian festivals in Arizona. The Arizona Asian Festival is where those cultures come together - where in one day, a person can take in an Indian yoga demonstration, an Indonesian Golden Deer dance, South Korean drumming, Hawaiian karate and a Japanese kimono demonstration. No fewer that 16 cultures are represented in the three-day festival, from Bangladesh to Taiwan.

On Sunday, April 27th, 2008, Nancy Moran of ALTRA will be moderating two Asian American Entertainment and Media Q&A Panels at the Newport Beach Film Festival. The panels are free and open to the public at the Edwards Islands Cinemas from 3:15-5pm. ALTRA Magazine has teamed up with Southern California’s Newport Beach Film Festival to help kick off their “Asian Films Cinema” showcase (scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28th). The purpose of these two discussion panels is to honor and celebrate successful Asian American Media and Entertainment professionals in the US.

In 2008, US ethnic communities will spend $59.8 billion on telecommunications services, accounting for over one-third of all residential telecom expenditures, according to a new market research study from The Insight Research Corporation.The ability to tap into the increased spending power of the Hispanic-American, African-American, and Asian-American communities will be crucial to the survival of telecommunications providers over the next five years.

Thirteen contestants showed off their heritage at the second annual Miss UT Asia Pageant hosted by the Asian American Culture Committee on April 15.These contestants competed in areas of cultural talent, dress and knowledge and they were chosen for their diversity and represented different cultures from across Asia.

A discussion of life in Asian countries will help kick off today’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. The event, set for 4 p.m. in the University Union’s 1965 Room, will feature presenters who are students native to Asian countries and students who have lived and studied in Asia. The discussion is sponsored by UW-Green Bay’s American Intercultural Center.

Joseph Groh’s popular eatery in a blue-collar neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia has been serving them up pretty much the same way since it opened in 1949. The restaurant, which is called Chink’s Steaks, was opened by Samuel Sherman, who was nicknamed “Chink” as a child because of his supposedly slanted, Asian-looking eyes. The problem is that the term “chink” is every bit as racist and hurtful to Asian Americans as “the n-word” is to African Americans — so much so that some have taken to calling it “the c-word.”
Asian American groups began lobbying Groh to change the name in 2004.

At UIC, April is Asian American Awareness Month. But many people are unaware of the fact. However, the goals of AAAM reflect the need for an increased appreciation for the struggles, the successes, and the overall spirit of the Asian American community - at UIC and across the country. Why would Asian Americans feel invisible on a campus like UIC, when they represent anywhere from 20 to 25 percent of the student body? There are many issues - both inside and outside the Asian American community - that contribute to the current state of affairs.

Baruch students have come together to help kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month which was originally celebrated during the first 10 days in May to commemorate the the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander and to honor their descendants in the United States.It is imperative to recognize different countries and their cultures so that the Baruch community can better learn and know more about one other.

The cultural club held its Annual Asian Night with the themes of change and self-discovery on Friday. The show was a combination of live performances and short films performed by some Greek organizations, the Chinese Student Association and a more varied group of collaborators.

Sponsored by the Asian American Association, a fashion show which is entirely run by the students took place on April 12.The show was divided up into four segments—Harajuku, Student Design, His/Hers and Hip-Hop to demonstrate the way students convey their sense of self through clothing choices and the use of fashion to make cultural statements.
