Police investigating alleged hate crime at UW frat house

Posted in Crime at 1:29 pm by william_lee

According to this article:

  • Witnesses told police Sunday night that they saw several people hurl water balloons and yell abusive comments from the Delta Upsilon fraternity house.

Just after 10 p.m., officers were called to the 19th Avenue Northeast fraternity house after a passer-by saw an Asian student get hit in the head by a water balloon, according to police. The caller said he then heard four or five people on the fraternity balcony yell anti-immigrant slurs at the man, who ran from the house.

Another UW student approached an officer who had responded to the call to say his friend had also been hit by a balloon thrown from the house.

The 27-year-old man told police he heard the people on the Delta Upsilon balcony shout racial slurs at his friend. He and the people on the balcony had a heated exchange of words, police said, but he left after some of those on the balcony threatened to “come down there” and settle the dispute.

Study: Sexist Humor Leads to Discrimination

Posted in Activism and Empowerment, Racism, Health, Education, Crime, Sexuality at 12:15 am by george_lou

woman-stop-sign.jpg

Researchers from Western Carolina University have concluded that sexist humor can promote discrimination against women

The study focused on male reactions after being subjected to either a) sexist jokes, b) comparable non-humorous sexist statements, or c) non-sexist jokes.

The news article points out 3 important findings.  First, men with a high level of sexism were less likely to donate to a women’s organization after reading sexist jokes.  Second, those same types of men implemented larger funding cuts to women’s organizations as opposed to other organizations.  Third, participants believed that other participants would approve of funding cuts to women’s organizations when sexist humor was present.

Well, well, well.  You dont have to a minority to know that this is all obvious.  As a matter of fact, we have pointed this out before here on Fall Out Central.  Remember Allport’s Scale of Prejudice?  It is a measuring stick for different levels of prejudices.  It starts with Scale 1, which is Antilocution - a group freely makes jokes about a minority group.  Then escalates up to Scale 5 - Extermination.

Tip to the researchers at Western Carolina University: sexist jokes can very well lead to physical attack, even worse.  It should be noted that their research is based on verbal interaction that takes place not in the presence of the victims.  In other words, the sexist jokes are not said face-to-face to a woman.

And what if those sexist jokes are said to directly to a woman?  We have also pointed out in the past that routine discrimination puts minorities under significant stress that can lead to chronic illness.

Good job guys at Western Carolina University.  Now ignorant people can stop using the excuse, “Well it’s just a joke.”

This Week’s APA Psycho: A Woman!

Posted in Crime at 1:40 pm by william_lee

This article states:

  • CAMBRIDGE - After Anna Tang and her boyfriend broke up three weeks ago, prosecutors say, the Wellesley College junior began sending him e-mails telling him she would kill him.

Yesterday, police said, she almost succeeded.

At about 6:30 a.m., Tang sneaked into his dorm room at MIT, climbed on top of him as he slept, and plunged a knife into his back, Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Kontz said in Cambridge District Court yesterday, where Tang was arraigned.

I don’t know about you, but I’m dying to know if this was a white-American or something else. One out of every 4 Asian American women who are married have a white-American husband (1), so I’m really interested to see if this (albeit dysfunctional) couple was of that combination too. Michael Chin Lenehan
Michael Chin Lenehan

**UPDATED 10/17** Fallout Central has learned that Michael Chin Lenehan’s father is Irish and his mother Chinese.

More disturbing details have emerged from the Tuesday arrest of Michael Chin Lenehan, the 29-year-old Chinese American man who allegedly murdered his girlfriend and slept beside her corpse for several days before surrendering to police. The victim has been identified as Lorna Santiago, 38, who had been dating Lenahan for just a week.

On Saturday night, Lenahan had taken Santiago to a strip club in midtown Manhattan and spent $50 buying her lap dances, according to investigators. Later, they returned to his apartment in Chinatown, which he shares with his ailing grandmother. However, the next day, Lenehan and got into a violent argument. When Lenehan demanded his $50 back, Santiago kicked him in the groin. Furious, Lenehan grabbed Santiago and strangled her.

For two nights, authorities claim Lenehan slept beside Santiago’s body after scrawling an apology on the wall. On Tuesday, Lenehan called his brother and told him what he’d done and his brother alerted their mother who went to Lenehan’s apartment and made the grisly discovery.

Lenehan is being charged with second degree murder and held without bail.

Suicide Website Creator Arrested For Murder

Suicide
Internet suicide is a growing epidemic in Japan

On Wednesday, police in Yokohama, Japan arrested a man for allegedly murdering a woman he met over a suicide-themed website he created. But here’s the twist, she paid him to do it.

The suspect, Kazunari Saito, a 33-year-old electrician, started his site in 2006 that provided tips on how to commit suicide — as well as offering his own personal assistance. To advertise his services, Saito posted such messages as “I will help you commit suicide” and “I will undertake whatever job, legal or illegal.”

Authorities believe that the victim, 21-year-old Sayaka Nishizawa, contacted Saito through his site and paid him 200,000 yen (roughly $1,700 US) for his help. On April 12, police said that Saito gave Nishizawa 20 to 30 sleeping pills to end her life and then wrapped a plastic bag around her head to ensure she was dead. Police are also charging Saito of illegally selling sleeping drugs through his website.

For those of you who have been trapped in a refrigerator, internet suicide is a troubling and rising epidemic in Japan. In recent years, similar cases reported in Hong Kong, South Korea and several countries in Europe. Click here to learn more.

Murder in NYC’s Chinatown

Lenehan
Suspected murderer Michael Lenehan escorted
out of Chinatown’s 5th Precinct

On Tuesday night, police responding to a 911 call discovered the body of a dead woman in an apartment in New York City’s Chinatown. The suspect, 29-year-old Michael Lenehan (our Chinatown contacts inform us that Lenehan is indeed Chinese American and “Lenehan” is actually his middle name; no explanation why the media is not using his actual surname), is believed to have strangled the woman in his apartment on Saturday after meeting her at a club. Police say Lenehan had left the corpse in his bedroom for three days until his mother discovered it and called 911.

The victim has not yet been identified but she is believed to be in her thirties. Conflicting news reports have suggested she is either from Mainland China or Puerto Rico.

More on this as it develops.
