Asian kid gets hazed

Posted in Crime at 11:02 pm by william_lee

According to this article:

  • LUBBOCK - This transfer student from a small Christian college near Seattle, Wash., had a rocky first semester at Texas Tech.

Steven Nguyen, 20, arrived at Tech last fall, looking for new opportunities at a bigger school.

Instead, he dropped out mid-semester, shortly after he accused Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity members of forcing him to drink and beating him as part of his initiation, which violates state and university hazing laws.

The incident, which spurred the closure of the troubled chapter, is briefly described in a university police log dated Sept. 15, 2007: “Officer Gilster investigated an assault that occurred at an off campus fraternity party. A student was transported to the University Medical Center for treatment for injuries from the assault. See incident report #07-1543.”

Tech’s student discipline office later determined the chapter broke the university’s code of conduct.

Toronto shooting: Chinatown raises $10K for funeral, mayor calls for handgun ban

Right: Hou’s children attend his funeral

Some updates on the shooting death of Hou Chang Mou, 47, a father of two who was working in Toronto’s East Chinatown when he became the unintended victim of a streetside gunfight:

Mao was commemorated in a funeral service on Jan. 25, with his 18-year-old daughter, Yun Yan, and 23-year-old son, Zuo Xi, in attendance. Mao’s wife, who lives in China, couldn’t afford to attend. The East Chinatown community had raised $10,000 to help with the funeral expenses.

A trust fund has been set up for Mao’s son and daughter at Scotiabank — donations can be made at any branch to account No. 41152-00320-18.

Police are still desperate for leads, and have posted several YouTube videos (here’s the English-language one) to that end. They’ve also set up a Facebook page, “Please Help! Hou Chang Mao,” that features videos, posters and a photo of a vehicle of interest in the case.

Hou’s death has sparked a call for a handgun ban in Toronto, and Mayor David Miller has met with Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley on the subject.

As Bentley says, “The handgun ban is essential, there are far too many handguns …”

16-year-old boy arrested in deputy’s killing

Posted in Crime at 9:43 am by william_lee

It truly is awesome that more than 100 police, sheriff’s detectives and federal agents went on a manhunt to find the person who shot and killed Sheriff’s Detective Vu Nguyen, who was killed Wednesday in south Sacramento (photo). My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

It is sad, however, that these fallen Asian brothers will not receive even a miniscule fraction of such effort.

Minneapolis SWAT Team Raids Wrong House

Posted in Crime at 8:43 pm by william_lee

According to this article, a bone-head SWAT team in Minneapolis decided to fire an alleged 22 bullets into the home of a peaceful and hard-working Hmong family of 8 before figuring out that this was not the drug-dealing cesspool that they originally thought it was. Yup. They raided the wrong house.

Now, I’d like to request that you, the reader, forget for a moment about how this was a monumental f___ up on the part of the SWAT team. Forget about the fact that this family was EXTREMELY lucky that no one in the family was hurt. Forget about all of that and answer this question honestly:

This family was American Hmong. If the family had been of a different ancestry, what would have happened in the aftermath? ‘Cuz you know that no one in America cares about an alleged 22 bullets fired at the wrong American Asian person. Provide your answers for each of these:

A) White American
B) Non-white American

My guess? White family wrongfully attacked -> Everyone jumps up to compensate them. Non-white American family wrongfully attacked -> nobody cares. Am I wrong?

White Teacher Requests Oral Sex In Exchange For Good Grades

  • Isaac Nathan Tillis, 29

BARTOW, Fla. — Police said a Bartow High School student hoping to improve her math grades through extra credit instead got a lewd request from her teacher.

Isaac Nathan Tillis, 29, was arrested after repeatedly telling student she could earn an “A” if she gave him oral sex. He lured the girl into a teacher’s lounge bathroom on Wednesday, but once inside police and the girl sprung a trap.

The 16-year-old was wearing a hidden listening device, which recorded Tillis’ proposition after he dropped his pants, police say. The teacher had also scribbled his request on a hall pass, an arrest report states.

Japanese Wannabe Convicted of 2 Murders

Posted in Crime, Offbeat at 6:20 pm by telly_wong

Steven Sakai
He Thinks He’s Turning Japanese:
Convicted Murderer and Imaginary Ninja Master Steven Sakai

In New York, a former strip club bouncer who was obsessed with Japanese culture –particularly sword fighting and ninjas– was convicted last Friday of murdering two people in 2005.

The bouncer, born Steven Sanders, was apparently so smitten by the Land of the Rising Sun that he even changed his last name to the Japanese surname “Sakai”.

But here’s where things get really wacky: During his testimony, Sakai adopted a thick Japanese accent, which included mispronouncing his L’s and R’s. This is despite the fact that Sakai was born in Queens and has never left the country.

Black Belt Jones
Perhaps an inspiration for Mr. Sakai?

Nevertheless, Sakai’s bizarre behavior left many in the courtroom baffled, with lawyers, stenographers, clerks and officers debating about the authenticity of the accent and wondering why his mother didn’t share it. There were also plans to test Sakai’s knowledge of Japanese, which were later abandoned.

During his testimony, Sakai claimed the police injected him with drugs and that he also took secret flights overseas to compete in martial arts tournaments.

After years of enduring Asian kids “acting Black”, I guess it’s refreshing to see someone from the African American community returning the love.

Hollywood’s Most Notorious Anti-Asian Movies

Posted in Activism and Empowerment, Community Offenders, Media and Entertainment, Racism, Crime at 6:41 am by george_lou

If I had all the time in the world, I would find all the Hollywood movies with characters in yellowface.  What is yellowface?  It is the act of non-Asian characters wearing makeup to obtain East Asian facial characteristics.  Needless to say, these characters engage in ultra offensive portrayals of how they think Asians behave in real life.  Do you know where these stereotypes - funny accent, slanted eyes, buck teeth, etc. - of us started?

Listing these types of movies would bring light to Hollywood’s racist side - the side I wish more Asians were aware of.  Unfortunately I dont have much time these days.

Enter Philip W. Chung of Asianweek.  Thank god this man has put together the most up-to-date list of yellowface movies.  In the article, “The 25 Most Infamous Yellow Face Film Performances,”  Chung ranks the twenty-five most offensive Hollywood movies.  Keep in mind it’s only the top twenty-five.  There are so many more.

Think yellowface movies are just historical footnotes?  Nope.  Three of them were released this year!

Here’s several famous culprits that stand out in yellowface history:

Eddie Murphy
Ricardo Montalban
Tony Randall
Katharine Hepburn
John Wayne
Rob Schneider
Mickey Rooney
Nicolas Cage

Do any Asians feel comfortable seeing these roles?  I would hate to pay for a movie only to see such racist crap.

So what are we to do?  BOYCOTT anything and everything that’s offensive to any Asian.

Sleepwalking Slasher Cleared of Attempted Murder

Posted in Crime, Offbeat at 2:47 am by telly_wong

Ju On

For as long as I remember, I would always lock the bedroom door before I went to sleep. This may have a lot to do with the psychological scarring my pop inflicted upon me when I was five after he took me to see the Charles Bronson movie 10 to Midnight. The movie was about a serial killer who liked to strip naked and then brutally murder young women, by the way.

These days, when my folks stay over, my mom always chides me for keeping up this little habit of mine. She thinks I’m paranoid and immature. For a while, I thought she may have a point.

And then I came across this little story:

In Hong Kong, a woman who repeatedly stabbed and strangled a friend while sleepwalking was released from prison last Thursday after being cleared of attempted murder.

Thirty-year-old Zheng Wei-dong was found not guilty of trying to kill her friend after a jury decided she had been in a state of “insane automatism” when she attacked her friend. Psychiatrists testified Zheng had fallen asleep and acted out a violent dream when she wandered into the room of her friend last December and attacked her, saying: “I am the devil and I am killing you.”

After repeatedly stabbing her friend’s neck, almost severing the jugular vein, Zheng then tried to smother her with a pillow. Zheng’s lawyer brilliantly argued that his client posed very little threat to society.

If only Zheng’s friend had just LOCKED THE GODDAMN DOOR!

NYPD Is Investigating Possible Hate Crimes

Posted in Community Alerts, Crime at 8:29 pm by william_lee

Police are investigating eight recent muggings of Asian men and women in Brooklyn’s 84th Precinct, authorities said Friday.

The first attack occurred Aug. 14, and the last victim was targeted Nov. 12, police said.

In each case, between one and five teens used intimidation and force to swipe property from their victims, whose ages range from 15 to 52, officials said.

The NYPD’s citywide robbery squad has been called in to aid the investigation, officials said.

The 84th Precinct’s commanding officer plans to continue discussions about the crimes with the area’s Asian-American community, officials said.

Police said the robberies appear to be part of a pattern.

Cops ask anyone with information to call (800) 577-TIPS.
