4 US Marines in Japan face court-martial

The U.S. military says it will court-martial four U.S. Marines in Japan for the alleged rape of a Japanese woman.

Master Gunnery Sgt. John Cordero of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni in southern Japan said Thursday that the courts-martial are to be held beginning next month.

The four Marines, accused of an attack on a 19-year-old woman in October, were charged by the military in December.

One man suspected in attacks on 21 women, girls

Seattle police say a man who has forcibly groped women in South Seattle may be responsible for as many as 21 attacks over the past three years, including four in the past two months. Police fear that the man is becoming increasingly violent after he tried to drag a woman into a dark driveway last fall and targeted two teenage girls walking together in January. The latest victim was attacked Feb. 10 near 20th Avenue South and South Plum Street. Following a similar pattern, the man sneaked up behind a 37-year-old woman.Two weeks earlier, he preyed on two girls, 13 and 14, as they were crossing the street in the 5200 block of 42nd Avenue South. Ling says petty theft charges stem from ‘innocent mistake’

Chinese-born actress Bai Ling was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of shoplifting items worth 16 U.S. dollars, Bai Ling says she made an “innocent mistake” when she allegedly took a pack of batteries and two tabloid magazines at Los Angeles International Airport without paying for them.
In a message posted on her blog hours after she was charged with petty theft on Monday, the Chinese actress said she’s “relieved” that prosecutors decided not to pursue a more serious misdemeanor count against her.

Actress Bai Ling Charged With Petty Theft

The Los Angeles City Attorney’s office has charged film actress Bai Ling with petty theft for allegedly stealing items from an airport shop last month.

Ling, who starred in The Crow and Anna and the King, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport following the alleged incident.

(She) was charged based on an arrest that occurred Feb. 13 at LAX where she stole two Star magazines and a package of batteries, spokesman Frank Mateljan told People.com, adding the value of the theft was $16.22.

The Chinese-American actress is to be arraigned March 5 and faces a maximum penalty of a $250 fine, the magazine said

Man’s body found near national park

Police believe a man whose body was found near a national park south-west of Melbourne was of Asian descent and aged in his 20s or 30s.
The body was found at Toynes Road near the You Yangs Regional Park in Little River, Homicide squad detectives are at the scene and have blocked off Toynes Road. Parks Victoria has closed walking tracks near the scene as of know detectives had so far been unable to determine the cause of death.
Police have yet to remove the body from the scene and are awaiting crime scene officers.




Couple Sentenced for Abuse of Pinoy Worker

An American motel owner in Oacama, South Dakota and his Filipina wife were sentenced on Feb. 22 for forcing almost a dozen Filipino OFWs into servitude and peonage. US District Judge Charles Kornmann sentenced Robert John Farrell (4 years and 2 months in Federal prison) and his wife, Angelita Magat Farrell (3 years) after they were found guilty by a federal jury on Nov 2007. They were convicted with nine counts each of conspiracy to commit peonage, 4 counts of peonage, document servitude, visa fraud, and two counts of making false statements to federal agents click here for more details

Tighter watch for US troops in Japan

Japan and the US military will tighten rules for troops who live off base after a series of incidents by American servicemen including an alleged rape of a teenager. Police on the southern island of Okinawa on February 11 arrested Staff Sergeant Tyrone Luther Hadnott, 38, on allegations he raped a 14-year-old local girl in his car. He has admitted trying to forcibly kiss the teenager but denied raping her. To learn more click here

Korean community demands answers in police shooting

Nearly 200 people gathered Tuesday night outside City Hall demanding answers to questions surrounding the death of Michael Sungman Cho, the man fatally shot by La Habra police on New Year’s Eve.

The 25-year-old was shot outside Seven Gold Liquor store in La Habra by La Habra police. Cho was a Korean American by origin. His friends and family mourned outside Seven Gold Liquor store.

The Korean-American community is pushing hard for justice for his death, and a recent protest was organized by Korean Americans to bring attention to this case; the community demands that the culprits be jailed. Another memorial is planned for Feb. 28 at UCLA.
