Hip Hop Concert to Save Native American University

A Hiphop concert featuring Kiwi and the Blue Scholars will be held on Friday May 2, 2008, at 7 pm at The Sacramento State University Ballroom. This is a project of UC Davis’s Students Organizing for Change and the Muslim Student Association in cooperation with Sacramento State University.

Geologic aka Prometheus Brown of Seattle’s Blue Scholars and San Francisco’s Kiwi, formerly of Native Guns, both Filipino-Americans will be the emcees. They will be working to promote people power awareness that addresses the human rights crisis and government corruption in the Philippines.

Bayan-USA, an alliance of progressive Filipino American organizations advocating for social justice and democracy in the Philippines, will be the main concert beneficiary. The local students will also be donating parts of the concert’s profit to DQ student organization. DQ University, the only Native American college in the state was closed due to previous school administration’s corruption. Hence, the school also lost it’s accreditation leaving the students suffering injustice.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2008

The Chinese American Museum is offering two (2) paid, full-time summer internships for qualified undergraduate students from June 16- August 22, 2008.

One Curatorial/ Collections internship to catalog, organize, and research in support of our next permanent exhibit about Chinese American culture. The intern will also be assisting with preparing exhibition space for CAM’s upcoming temporary exhibit.

One Education internship to develop curriculum about Chinese American history and immigration, assist in docent training, and help in developing public programs at the Museum.

Glen Dale Couple On a Mission

An average of 30 doctors and nurses, headed by Dr. Vic Chin of Glen Dale and his wife, goes to their home country every year for a medical mission. The group performs goiter removal, cleft lip repair and Lasik surgery in the Philippines with assistance from the Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, the local Filipino-American Association of the Tri-State and the Filipino-American Doctors Association, a group of Filipino doctors from around the Mountain State.

Dr. Dale said to start this project since 1983. They found it more relaxing than tiring to help their fellow Filipinos.

Around the Island

Mary Woodward’s book entitled “In Defense of Our Neighbors,” is expected to be distributed by September after expected printing next Month. Her parents, Milly and Walt Woodward, who supported the Bainbridge Island’s Japanese American community during the wartime was the main character of Mary’s book.

Previously short funded for publishing, the book received several anonymous donors after popularization on the internet. It also that it reached Japanese newspapers which helped gain more audience.

MFA celebrates baseball’s Japanese-American connection

An exhibit titled “Rockwell and the Shinjin” (the Japanese word for “rookie”) displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston will run through July 20. It showcases Red Sox memorabilia that includes Hideki Okajima’s 2007 World Series jersey and a ticket stub from the 2008 MLB Season Opener that was recently played in Japan.

“With this exhibit, I wanted to connect Opening Day with Japan,” explains curator Karen Quinn. “The Japanese collection is important part of the museum and has been called the best in the world.” (Quoted from Milford Daily News)

International Affairs: Implications for Asian Pacific Americans

Inadequacy of representation for Asian Pacific Americans in US international affair was a force that moves the Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP), a prestigious fellowship of the UNCF Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP). The organization helps Asian Pacific Americans and other college students of color to be prepared in the international arena.

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor the global contributions of some Asian Pacific Americans and to highlight how that legacy continues in the U.S. international arena with younger generations who are IIPP fellows.”

Houston 80-20 Asian-American PAC Announces Sugar Land Endorsements

Daniel Wong was endorsed as Mayor by the Houston 80-20 Asian American PAC for the Sugar Land City elections. The said announcement on Sunday at Madras pavilion in Sugar Land also highlighted the group’s support for Tom Abraham and S.B. Gaddi as city councilmen.

The 80-20 Initiative is a national, non-partisan, and Pan-Asian-American political organization. According to the organization, as stated in New York Times, Houston 80-20 encourages Asian Americans “to vote as a bloc and to promote active participation in the political process.”
