10-year old Fil-Am wins World Sport Stacking tilt

A record of 1.86 seconds for the Individual 3-3-3 Stack Division, this year’s champion is Filipino-American boy from Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He is also the champion for the Individual Stacking Division with the speed of 6.21 seconds.
Stacking is a sport where contestants stack up 12 cups in different order in a remarkable speed.

Senators, CAPAC meet Asian American Pacific Islander Small Business leaders

“Small business owners in the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities face unique challenges in accessing capital, government contracts and business counseling, particularly with language and cultural barriers,” as said by Rep. Mike Honda, Chair of CAPAC at indiapost.com…

The conversation was important, because it tackles the steps in evaluating the needs for the improvement and opportunities of the Asian American Small Businesses.

“Small businesses have historically lifted our economy out of hard economic times, but we need to provide the tools that allow them to concentrate on innovation and growth,” said, Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, a member from the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.

Spotlight on Asian Heritage events at PDSB

Jim Grieve says in The Brampton News that: “Asian Heritage Month allows students to learn more about the rich culture and traditions of the Asian community, as well as the considerable contributions of Asian-Canadians,”…

Kindergarten to grade 12 students from Peel School Board will be celebrating Spotlight on Asian Heritage events with the help of multimedia presentations and some interactive group. It is an event where you can learn more about Asian Culture and their traditions. It is also a chance for Canadians to recognize the contributions of Asian-Canadians to the development and success of Canada.

Radio station Flow 93.5 hosted the event which also engaged in problems about racism and sense of belongingness to both historical and contemporary perspective.

Rose Chen Appointed SVP, Private Banking for Encore Bank

Rose Chen is the new Senior Vice-President in Commercial Banking for Encore Bank. With 15 years of banking and financial proficiency, she could really be a good asset to the bank. She was the previous Senior Vice-President for Sterling Bank and MetroBank.

She took up B.S. International Economics at Texas Tech University and with several affiliations.

Arts and Sciences | First dean candidate visits SU

Donald Hall, a new dean to be placed in the College of Visual & Performing Arts went at the university to have a meeting with the administration and to have a press conference with the students. Two of the Asian-American students in that university attended the said conference and they have discussed about having an Asian/American program studies on campus.

The soon-to-be dean agreeably responded saying: “You have my full support”… he said that the university should be open-minded for some group of students who has a clear need for their studies. One more interesting point that he wants for the university is to make the study abroad programs inexpensive for the student. And lastly he wanted the funds of the College of Arts and Sciences to be used in putting up organizations for students who are eager to learn.

The university is now hoping to have a new dean for their department, after three consecutive schedules of selecting a dean.

Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans names winners of prestigious annual awards

Minnesotans Sri Lanka Foundation received an award for the good job they have done. One of the projects they had was the Boxing Day Tsunami Sri Lanka. The foundation is not just for recognizing the needs of the victims of tsunami, but to raise funds for them and help people find new living.

“If you can spread global language, English, in Sri Lanka, it will help build a relationship between the communities,” Lal said. “I think, in the long run, education is the key to solving this problem.”

Mr. Liyanapathiranange, Srilal or Lal is the CEO of the Minnesota Sri Lanka Friendship Foundation.

Asian American Groups Dismayed by U.S. Supreme Court Decision Upholding Voter ID Law

Supreme Court unsuccessfully distinguished that some groups are discouraging the Asian-Americans and other minority citizens of their right to vote. AALDEF have been monitoring voters ever since, but they just found out that there has been a discrimination happening to the Asian American voters.

It was a 34 year old man who opened the case sincerely uttered his dismay to the Supreme Court. AALDEF says that they will continue monitoring the votes until such discrimination stopped. They have listed a couple of organizations in order to help AALDEF in these circumstances.

Maxine Hong Kingston is a Chinese-American author who imagines big and uses Chinese mythology in her writings. The editor David Ulin described her writings as very American; this novelist from Oakland says she described China like the one from her thoughts.

Comedy Troupe Shows There’s ‘Room To Improv’

Crystal Cove Auditorium was filled up by audiences as the Comedy Troupe performed a show entitled “Room To Improv”. Comedy Troupe is composed of world-class Asian-American performers who is doing different kinds and uniquely made shows.

The “Room to Improv” show had a mock political debate and making it a unique and fun show because they had the audiences participated, they replaced key words with fun word such as “cheese shortage”…

As they quoted from New University ““We want to be looked at as Asian- Americans doing improv, not Asian-Americans doing Asian -American improv,”
