Half of subways are clean

The 9th annual “subway shmutz” survey (New York City) released by the Straphangers Campaign shows that 50 percent of subway cars are clean. Although the E train ranked at the bottom of the list at 29 percent, that was a significant increase from a sorrowful 2 percent in the 2005 survey. City Councilmember John Liu said that the improvement on the 7 line is belated, but nonetheless welcome.

Filipino artist uses Pinoy influences to do more

Artist Michael Arcega is trying to make art with his latest piece being showcased in L.A.’s “One Way or Another” exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum. He commonly employs practices that aren’t overtly Filipino. Wanting to speak to a bigger and more varied audience, Arcega thinks that he should not speak to a Filipino audience only.

APIA month celebrates diversity of Asian identities

Asian Pacific Islander/American Heritage Month, officially celebrated by the U.S. in the month of May, began at the tail end of MULTi week with a workshop by Carmen Van Kerckhove on interracial dating. Events scheduled throughout the month, including a workshop and a performance which aim to raise awareness of issues pertaining to the Asian Pacific Islander/American experience.

New York Worker’s Rights Clinic for Non-English Speakers

Councilman John C. Liu announced an upcoming clinic on worker’s rights in collaboration with the Urban Justice Center. The clinic will offer one-on-one sessions to consult with attorneys on issues ranging from unpaid wages to unfair treatment. It will take place on Monday, March 31, at the office of Councilman Liu in Flushing, Queens. Language interpretation will be provided in Spanish, Korean and Chinese.

China Game And The Troubles
In Gamasutra’s latest China Angle column, Frank Yu says that with the booming of China’s online population, the games industry is growing increasingly nervous about government crackdowns following the shuttering of online video sites, and looks at recent controversy over the Beijing Olympics website’s co-option of some casual games. China has got the largest Internet population in the world with 228 million users vs. the 217 million in the U.S. More users also mean more gamers as expectations rise on the continued growth of the China game industry. All this goodness comes with a bit of trepidation as other events unfold that could rain on the parade. The China game industry is cautiously observing how the government has been dealing with video sharing sites and is asking itself “when is it my turn?” The government has shut down 25 “illegal” video sites and served warnings to the #1 domestic site Tudou and 32 others in the latest crackdown.
