V for Vindication: Filipinas at the heart of this year’s ‘Vagina Monologues’

The annual V-Day women’s movement continues on March 31 with the Filipina Women’s Network’s fifth annual presentation of Eve Ensler’s highly acclaimed play, The Vagina Monologues, at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. The Filipina Women’s Network, a nonprofit organization that provides resources for women of Filipino descent in abusive relationships, has also organized performances in New York on April 18 and 19. Ten percent of the show’s proceeds will be donated back to Eve Ensler’s global V-Day efforts. The rest will be used to pay for the play’s production.

MAYOR NEWSOM COMMISSIONS APPOINTMENTS March 26 2008

Mayor Newsom announced today the following new appointment and reappointments to San Francisco’s Commissions. He appointed Nínive Clements Calegari to the Arts Commission and reappointed Min Paek, the Executive Director of the Korean American Women Artists and Writers Association (KAWAWA), to the Taxi Commission-Reappointments.

Shanghai Quartet and Chanticleer

A striking new co-commissioned piece by Chinese American composer Chen Yi, “From the Path of Beauty,” unveiled March 13 in San Francisco and reprised Tuesday night at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The composer calls her 37 1/2 -minute, seven-movement evocation of ancient Chinese arts “a song cycle for mixed voices and string quartet”.

Multicultural center plays host to Asian-American conference

Let's get ready for this!
The Sabatini Multicultural Resource Center will host its first major regional conference this weekend when around 400 delegates gather for the Midwest Asian-American Students Union Spring Conference. Delegates from 24 schools throughout the Midwest will come to the University of Kansas from March 28 to 30 to attend workshops, a career fair and banquets in the 7,000 square foot facility that was completed recently.

Coronary calcium testing predicts future heart ailments

It is said in the March 28 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that Calcium deposits in coronary arteries provide a strong predictor for possible future heart attacks and cardiac diseases, and detecting such deposits can be valuable for promoting overall cardiac health. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, the study is the largest involving CT scanning and is the first to include racially and ethnically diverse participants.

T-Mac, Rockets Beat Timberwolves 97-86

Houston Rockets got a 97-86 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night.Tracy McGrady scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and Luis Scola had 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.The Rockets outrebounded the Wolves 58-38 and scored 14 second-chance points to win for the 19th time in their last 21 home games.It is reported that the Rockets have won 29 of their last 33 games.

‘Planet B-Boy’: Break-dancing goes global

The release of the new documentary Planet B-boy directed by Benson Lee, shows that the global reach of hip-hop extends to b-boying.The stories in “Planet B-Boy” might surprise some who view hip-hop as a destructive force. However,what hip-hop is really about is those socially and politically conscious dancers. B-boying helped focus young people in ways every parent can get behind, teaching something to the parents about a new generation.

Congestion pricing nearing a vote

Congestion pricing advocates are making their final efforts to persuade city and state lawmakers to support a congestion pricing plan that would decrease traffic in Manhattan’s central business district as well as raise money for mass transportation projects.The plan is controversial and is opposed by people from Queens and Brooklyn who drive into the city and would be hurt the most.
