Scientists eye new planet

Scientists in Japanese university believed an another planet up to two-thirds the size of the Earth was orbiting in the far reaches of the solar system. The researchers said that the theoretical calculations using computer simulations led them to conclude that it was only a matter of time before the mysterious “Planet X” was found. This planet is likely to be discovered in less than 10 years. The research, led by Kobe University professor Tadashi Mukai along with researcher Patryk Lykawka, will be published in the April issue of the US-based Astronomical Journal.




Hyundai plans to tackle China market slump with new models

Hyundai Motor is planning to introduce three models in China and open a new manufacturing plant in the country, in an attempt to overcome the 20% fall in the sales of its China ventures, reported Bloomberg. China is believed to be the world’s fastest growing automobiles market. Hyundai reportedly started trailing behind Volkswagen and General Motors in the auto race because of models that no longer interested buyers. The company is likely to introduce the HDC car, which has been designed for the Chinese market, in April 2008 and also include a medium-sized sedan.




Chinese folk dance celebrated in US

Chinese folk dance is being celebrated both inside and outside of China’s territory. The traditional art form is winning legions of fans world especially in America. Chinese folk music is backed melodious music and clamorous drum beats, students of different cultural backgrounds and ethnicity enjoy practicing the movements of Miao ethnic dances. Chinese folk dance class is practiced and performed at the Tisch Art School of New York University. Students show great zeal to learn a different culture through dancing. “Phoenix”, a contemporary dance epic choreographed by Aly Rose in 2006, created something of a sensation in Chinese dance. Aly Rose’s Chinese name is Luo Hongmei. Graduating in 1996 with degrees in psychology and dance, Rose came to China. She settled in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, where she was captivated by Chinese ethnic dancing. In 1999 Rose pursued her interest, coming to study at the Beijing Dance Academy.




Thaksin returns to Thailand after 17 months of exile

Ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra waves to his supporters as he leaves the supreme court in Bangkok. Thaksin Shinawatra made an emotional return from exile today, swearing to stay out of politics despite a widespread belief he would run the country from behind the scenes. Deposed Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned today from 17 months in exile to face corruption charges, receiving a hero’s welcome from supporters and vowing to restore his reputation following his ouster in a coup.Thaksin was born into a well-off Chinese-Thai business family in the northern city of Chiang Mai. He joined the police upon graduation from high school and later earned scholarships to American universities for graduate degrees in criminology. He became the first civilian prime minister to serve out a full four-year term.

Police briefly took the 58-year-old billionaire into custody after he arrived at Bangkok’s international airport on a Thai Airways flight from Hong Kong, and brought him before a top court where he was immediately released on bail.

While he could face up to 15 years behind prison bars, Thaksin’s return was a triumphant re-entry to center stage of Thai politics despite nearly two years when the country’s most powerful institutions, including the military, tried to eradicate his legacy and keep him at bay.




Talmadge House has open house to draw visitors

The Talmadge House is one of the three cultural and heritage centers currently open and located on B Street. The open house event was held to familiarize the public with the new location of the house, which was formerly located in Cleveland Hall. The idea behind to open the house was to have a place where people can go and share cultures in a more casual setting, removed from the pressures of academia Culture comes in so many different forms, from music to food to dance, etc., and these are places to get together and celebrate that diversity even students would enjoy the home-like environment, and wanted the houses to be welcoming to students and the general community The Talmadge House is also used for cultural competency workshops, a whole series of which is in development. The workshops are organized by Diversity Education, which has its offices at the house and uses the training room. However, the team also trains elsewhere on campus since the houses are not handicap accessible. A fourth house focusing on Asian Pacific American heritage is being planned for the future.

SIS Productions, an Asian-American company best known for its serial comedy Sex in Seattle. SIS is earnest and well-intentioned, the kind of company you want to grade on a curve. The company created Sex in Seattle to trick young Asian audiences into watching theater. Sex in Seattle is currently running reruns of its first 14 episodes—but the second is trickier. Kathy Hsieh, SIS’s articulate artistic director, says it’s difficult to find quality scripts about contemporary Asian Americans.

Japanese American National Museum Presents a Wide Spectrum Of Contemporary Creations in ‘One Way or Another’. This exhibition is organized by the Asia Society. There will be many exhibits and artists that will display their talent in this exhibition. Artists like Jean Shin, Chitra Ganesh, and Giant Robot Biennal. These artists will be focusing on contemporary Asian-American culture. The artists range in age from 28 to 42.

Indian accused of death threats to Canadian employee

An Indo-Canadian woman who sent a present to Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty and later enquired whether he had received it has been charged with making death threats to a staff member of the province head. The same night, she emailed McGuinty, asking whether Masciantonio had given him the mix. “I said, ‘If she didn’t give it to you, I’ll kill her’. It’s just slang,” Vir said. She said she used the term “main tumhari jaan nikal dungi (I will kill you)” all the time with her husband and kids. Police arrested Vir in November and seized her laptop, camera and other documents, and later released her on the condition that she would not contact the premier, his staff, family, and not enter the provincial assembly, known as Queen’s Park. But 40-year-old Vir, a PhD in Botany who migrated to Canada with her family in 2002, wrote to the premier again, apologising for her mistake, which she called “a cultural misunderstanding

Man’s body found near national park

Police believe a man whose body was found near a national park south-west of Melbourne was of Asian descent and aged in his 20s or 30s.
The body was found at Toynes Road near the You Yangs Regional Park in Little River, Homicide squad detectives are at the scene and have blocked off Toynes Road. Parks Victoria has closed walking tracks near the scene as of know detectives had so far been unable to determine the cause of death.
Police have yet to remove the body from the scene and are awaiting crime scene officers.
