Study: Sexist Humor Leads to Discrimination

Researchers from Western Carolina University have concluded that sexist humor can promote discrimination against women

The study focused on male reactions after being subjected to either a) sexist jokes, b) comparable non-humorous sexist statements, or c) non-sexist jokes.

The news article points out 3 important findings.  First, men with a high level of sexism were less likely to donate to a women’s organization after reading sexist jokes.  Second, those same types of men implemented larger funding cuts to women’s organizations as opposed to other organizations.  Third, participants believed that other participants would approve of funding cuts to women’s organizations when sexist humor was present.

Well, well, well.  You dont have to a minority to know that this is all obvious.  As a matter of fact, we have pointed this out before here on Fall Out Central.  Remember Allport’s Scale of Prejudice?  It is a measuring stick for different levels of prejudices.  It starts with Scale 1, which is Antilocution - a group freely makes jokes about a minority group.  Then escalates up to Scale 5 - Extermination.

Tip to the researchers at Western Carolina University: sexist jokes can very well lead to physical attack, even worse.  It should be noted that their research is based on verbal interaction that takes place not in the presence of the victims.  In other words, the sexist jokes are not said face-to-face to a woman.

And what if those sexist jokes are said to directly to a woman?  We have also pointed out in the past that routine discrimination puts minorities under significant stress that can lead to chronic illness.

Good job guys at Western Carolina University.  Now ignorant people can stop using the excuse, “Well it’s just a joke.”

Very timely article. People really need to understand that racism ans sexism goes hand and hand when it comes to prejudiced acts of hate towards APA’s. It will not be tolerated. In time these issues will reach the point of congressional action, and hearings in the US Supreme court.

Keep fighting all you APA activists!! All you college students up for the APA cause!! Keep fighting on. We will prevail!!!

More research should be done to further *PROVE* that sexist/racist suggestions placed against AM’s and AF’s is potentually harmful, practically crippling the health of many; tormented by these kinds of subtle racist attacks endured in this country, through the media, and the entertainment industry, as well as, and from the common people.

Then of course ther is the outright heinous acts of violence and murders committed against APA’s……

Maybe more scientific findings like this will bring about changes in the media about the APA image. Which will give a wake up call to all America, that this is supposed to be a country where “all are created equal” and each sharing equal opportunities.

I really enjoyed the article “Words can Hurt” under the “puts minorities under significant stress that can lead to chronic illness” link in bold. A must read, very informative article on relating the psychological effects racism causes on APA’s.

It’s not just a white on Black issue anymore. Times has changed. Time to give these bigots the wake up call they deserve.

    Good job, Fallout Central!!
    Keep em articles coming!

Anglo defense #1: “Hey man, it’s “just a joke!”

In reality, it’s a way to test the waters for the degree of acceptable racism. If everybody laughs, they can escalate the hate. If anyone gets offended, they can pass it off as a “harmless joke.”

All it really amounts to is passive-aggressive racism - antilocution. And paves the way for worse forms…
