Opinion Survey: Asian Americans in Movies

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:53 am by admin

Images of Asian Americans in movies such as “Balls of Fury“:

A. ultimately lead to the empowerment of all Asian Americans.
B. ultimately lead to the empowerment of Asian American women, but lead to the disempowerment of Asian American men.
C. ultimately lead to the empowerment of Asian American men, but lead to the disempowerment of Asian American women.
D. ultimately lead to the disempowerment of all Asian Americans.

Consider: In this movie, as is the case in the recent movie, “I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry,” we see a tired dichotomy that is constantly presented in movies, television, and other forms of mass-media where the Asian American woman:

  • Can speak English well
  • Is assimilable into American society
  • Is socially and/or romantically desirable

Whereas the Asian American man:

  • Cannot speak English well
  • Is not assimilable into American society
  • Is not socially and/or romantically desirable

UC Davis launches Asian American Center

Posted in Education at 4:02 am by admin

First center of its kind in the United States

According to this article, UC Davis has been awarded $3.9 million to launch the Asian American Center on Disparities Research (AACDR). The research center is the only on efunded in the United States to focus on mental health issues concerning Asian Amercans.

  • “I welcome the new UC Davis Center because they will contribute very substantially and substantively to the gaps in our understanding of mental health issues affecting Asian Americans,” said Moon Chen Jr., principal investigator for Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness Research and Training (AANCART). “Among U.S. racial/ethnic groups, Asian Americans are the least likely to be cited in publicly assessable literature, even if they’re the nation’s fastest growing group in percentage terms.”

This is a significant step forward in addressing the adverse health effects uncovered in a recent research study published by Dr. Gilbert C. Gee

Posted in Politics at 12:14 am by admin

When New York City Councilman John Liu called a fired DJ a “sick, racist pedophile” for making sex-laced rants about a rival’s young daughter, would listeners have taken the councilman’s comments literally? A federal judge said no on Friday, throwing out DJ Star’s defamation lawsuit against Liu. The judge said Mr. Liu’s remarks could not be seen as factual by most listeners and viewers, which is key to a defamation claim.
