A few interesting items in sports:
Upstate New York’s Star-Gazette reports on how Koreans are dominating women’s golf, with the latest LPGA Corning Classic as an example. The article presents a few guesses at the cultural reasons behind the phenomenon.
Michelle Wie has resumed her quest to compete against the men of the sport, accepting a sponsor’s exemption to play in the U.S. PGA John Deere Classic in Illinois this July.
Toby Dawson, now retired at the ripe old age of 28, is embracing his ancestral homeland something fierce: As an honorary ambassador for Pyeongchang, South Korea, he’s promoting the city’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
He told reporters in Seoul, “My passion is to develop a strong program in (South) Korea to get Korean athletes prepared to not just mentally but physically … be in medal contention for the 2014 Winter Olympics.”
Toby also got married in traditional Korean style in the city of Busan recently, to Leah Helmi. (See photo.)
Last but not least, The Arizona Republic profiles archer Lindsay Pian, 20, one of the favorites to represent the U.S. in the Beijing Olympics.

In August 2006, Paul A. Heavy and his friend Kevin Brown were driving in the pre-dawn hours when they spotted a car driven by Reynold Liang with three Asian friends as passengers. Cursing and spewing racial insults, they slammed their car into Liang’s. When Liang, 19, pulled over to check his car for damage, Heavey and Brown began pummeling him and passenger John Lu, 19. Liang was beaten with a metal automobile steering wheel lock. The court’s sentence for Paul A. Heavy’s crime was merely a slap on the wrist: a mandatory apology, 75 hours of community service, and five years of probation.
On Tuesday, 5/22/07, WNBC reported on the court decision using this headline:
“Student Offers Apology for Queens Hate Crime On Asians”
Newsday reported on the court decision using this headline:
“Student apologizes for racial attack”
The Times Ledger used this headline:
Little Neck man apologizes for Doug hate attack”
Why does mainstream media choose to report this incident in this way?

Senators Clinton and Hagel (R-NE) have introduced an amendment that will recategorize minor children and spouses of Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) as immediate family members. Currently, they fall under the Second Preference A, a category which will not be elimated by the current proposed immigration legislation being discussed in the Senate. However, there is an annual limit and a significant backlog in this category. By moving this category out of family preference category and into the immediate family category, the backlog will be eliminated sooner (the wait may still be as much as a year), as there is no quota for visas for immediate family members.
It is our hope that this amendment will start a series of amendments that will address some of the concerns with the cur! rent proposed legislation.
Please contact Senator Clinton at 202-224-4452 or 212-688-6262 to thank her for her support of immigrant families, but let her know that the Asian American community is paying very close attention!
Please contact Senator Schumer at 202-224-6542 or 212-489-4430 to ask him to support the amendment and ask him to follow Clinton’s lead in introducing amendments that will bring families together!
Below is more information about the amendment.
Thank you.

Urge Your Senator to Vote for the Clinton-Hagel Amendment!
Currently, spouses and minor children of lawful permanent residents (LPRs) are allowed only 87,900 visas each year. Due to the backlog created by insufficient visas there is a nearly five year wait for these legal immigrants to be reunited with their families. This creates continuing pressure on immigrants to come illegally and delays the full integration of new immigrants into American society. The U.S. prides itself in welcoming newcomers and protecting families, but the current immigration bill being considered by the Senate does nothing for these families.
Senators Hilary Clinton (D-NY) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE) have introduced an amendment that would provide relief to families of LPRs by:
Placing minor children and spouses of lawful permanent residents into the “immediate relative” category for family-based visa petitions;
Lifting the cap on the number of visas available to these close family members; and
Allowing permanent residents to reunite with their loved ones in a timely fashion.
Please contact your Senators and urge them to support this amendment which protects the families of legal, law-abiding immigrants by moving the minor children and spouses of LPRs into the “immediate relative” category.
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to be directly connected to your
Senators’ offices.
Urge both of your Senators to support the Clinton-Hagel Amendment today!

Great news for true Americans! Clear Channel Communications (parent company of Power 105.1) fired talk show host Barb Stanton in the wake of controversial statements insulting to Asian Americans aired on Talk 960. From the article,
- Stanton falsely claimed on the air that the president of East West Bank is not an American citizen, asserted that the bank merger is “going to be a big time for all, except us, the true Americans“
- “Dominic Ng is not only a U.S. citizen, he happens to serve on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco”
- Clear Channel officials on Monday confirmed that Stanton had been terminated.

Dear Mr. Moonves
Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for your allowing me to participate in the May 4 meeting at CBS headquarters between Mr. Chiusano, his colleagues and Asian American community leaders. The meeting demonstrated to my colleagues and I CBS’s honest concerns regarding Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay’s history of anti-Asian remarks disguised as “edgy comedy.”
Needless to say, my colleagues and I are tremendously pleased with your decision to cancel “The Dog House,” and with the message you are sending to the world. The Asian American community regards CBS’s decision as an amazing leap forward towards more racially sensitive portrayals of Asian Americans in American media.
For decades, Asian Americans have been marginalized in the American media by offensive caricatures and stereotypes that paint us as unassimilable and inscrutable foreigners. CBS’s actions help to reinforce a fact that is often ignored in our society: Asian Americans are Americans and deserve the same respect as everyone else.
As a result of this event, my colleagues and I are committed to using all of our energies and resources to fully support the sponsors who stand alongside CBS’s shining example of dignity and respect for all people.
Sincerely,
William Lee
