subject A Reply to Mrs. Vandergrift’s outrageous defense of JV & Elvis

Dear Mrs. Vandergrift,

Thank you for the reply – despite the fact that it was clearly a form letter that you’ve been blasting out for damage control. But we do appreciate the thought. Really, we do.

Actually, in our email, we were politely seeking an explanation as to how you, as an Asian American woman, can allow your hubby to continually make racist and denigrating remarks about our community. However, since you are now attacking us and our friends while defending two racists, we, too, would also like to defend ourselves.

So now…please join us as we use this opportunity to take a peaceful stroll (cue The Price is Right Showcase Showdown music here) through your literary creation and completely obliterate every single point you attempted to make!

(Editor’s note: According to her official bio, Mrs. Vandergrift claims to be “the first Asian model to grace the set of The Price Is Right.”)

subject Re: Your husband’s anti-Asian antics

These ’special interest groups’ do not represent all of us. They are
twisting the story and making it look like JV is a racist and has
hatred toward Asians. This is so ridiculous! The prank call was a
joke. The actual call to the Chinese restaurant was nice and pleasant.
He split the track and added a computer voice with over the top Asian
jokes. If the person or people that have headed this lynch mob
campaign against JV and the Doghouse, they would’ve known this.
Again, I want to state that no mean call was ever made to the Chinese
restaurant. It was a very respectful call and the humor was added
later with a computer voice.

The proof of your hubby’s racist hate speech is on his very own website/blog. Perhaps you haven’t been listening to his show (though we can’t blame you because, prior to these recent circumstances, we’ve never listened to it either quite frankly), but anti-Asian remarks are a regular part of his and Dan Lay’s (a.k.a. “Elvis”) on-air schtick. Listen here as they use a mock Korean accent to poke fun at Seung Hui Cho’s confession tape while tossing in racist non-sequiturs like “you rike fortune cookie?”. Listen here as they repeatedly insult New York City Councilman John Liu’s ethnicity during an interview by shouting at him to “sirence” and “risten” as well as telling him he “can’t see”.

Regarding the supposedly “faked” prank calls, we would like to be presented with the raw, unedited material for our careful examination. And let’s say for a minute here that what you’re saying is true. That would mean that your husband and Lay don’t really make racist and sexist prank phone calls to Chinese restaurants, they just pretend to make racist and sexist prank phone calls to Chinese restaurants, and then attempt to pass them off as real to their listeners. Okay! Great! We stand corrected!

They poke fun at everyone and all races! It was a joke. The media has
never once mentioned how much he’s helped the Asian community. He was
a voice for Asians when no one else cared, he’s given out of his own
pocket so much money to battered Asian women, he’s helped out the
Asian community in so many ways. They never mentioned any of that.
It’s interesting that they failed to mention that his producer of 10
years, Lance Otani aka Hollywood, was the one that came up with the
idea for this bit. Out of JV’s 15 years in radio, he has had
producers, phone answerers, and guest bookers that are of Asian decent
almost the entire time. These Asian Americans were a constant part of
creating the programming.

“They poke fun at everyone and all races!” – this is the oldest and most tired excuse in the book. I believe that the Aryan Brotherhood and the Ku Klux Klan also lay claim to that same slogan.

Everyone here at FALLOUT CENTRAL would love to see some specific examples of how “JV” has helped our community. Let us note that routine trips to The Golden Flower, an Asian massage parlor and brothel that they frequently like to discuss, doesn’t really count as an example of how “he’s given out of his own pocket so much money to battered Asian women.”

They are targeting JV and The Doghouse because of the whole Imus
thing. These interest groups are taking away our freedom of speech
and taking away one of the most important gifts we have in
life…humor. These ‘groups’ are the ones that are racist and
hateful! I’m getting all these threatening emails saying that they
wish me dead, would like to piss on me, that they wish Cho would have
shot me instead of the Virginia Tech students, and I am a disgrace,
whitewashed wanna-be. Real nice, huh? What the heck did I do?? The
media is taking one side because it’s the media. I WOULD NEVER
ASSOCIATE MYSELF WITH SOMEONE THAT IS RACIST! I’m all about
empowering the Asian community. But if we can’t poke fun of ourselves
than we’re taking life way to serious. My guess is 99.9% of the world
has made a joke about someone because of his or her differences. Does
that make them a racist or a person of hate?

Yes, we are, in part, targeting your husband and Lay over “the whole Imus thing”. Our community won’t allow any double standards when it comes to CBS Radio’s policy on dealing with racist on-air hate speech. They fired Imus because of “nappy-headed hos”, they must fire your boo and Lay for “flied lice”, “rice pickles”, “hot Asian spicy ass” and countless other remarks that have degraded our community and cultural heritage.

Those comments that people made about wanting to urinate on you and wishing that Cho shot you instead were just jokes. Come on, lighten up! Like you said, “if we can’t poke fun of ourselves than [sic] we’re taking life way to [sic] serious”!

You are “all about empowering the Asian community”? Please elaborate. Or maybe perhaps if I joined the “VIP Section” of your website for $19.99 a month, I can find proof of your claims there.

JV turned his radio show into an all spiritual show for a year, a few
years back. His two main points were to have love for all people but
don’t take life too serious. You have to be able to laugh at our
subtle differences. He is a comedian for god sake! And all of his
listeners know that. Should Bobby Lee (an Asian American) from Mad TV
be targeted? Should we also demand the head of Dave Chappelle? Should
Carlos Mencia be silenced?

His idea of “love” and displaying “love for all people” is hate speech and racist remarks? I don’t believe Gandhi ever sexually harassed Asian women on the phone and said that Asian men have “the rice pickle”. Your husband’s brand of racial hatred, which he disguises as “edgy comedy”, only divides and marginalizes us. Period.

Should we eliminate all comedy including movies and television when
they do racial humor? Some people would like that. Some people like
when others are poked fun at, but when there are jokes about their own
ethnicity they lose it. I see those as shallow people. Again, JV is
a multi dimensional person. His friends are of all colors. His
causes have helped people of all color. But it would be racist to
eliminate certain groups from his comedy. His comedy is not hateful.
He pokes fun in a playful manner to bring a smile to people’s
faces….not to divide us and discriminate us as human beings. These
‘interest groups’ need to find out people for who they are before
passing judgment or joining lynch mobs that don’t have a clue as to
who they’re attacking.

Another exhausted cliché. He’s not a racist ‘cause he has friends “of all colors”. Do you know who Strom Thurmond was? Of course not. He was the most notoriously racist Congressman in modern U.S. history. And guess what? He had a daughter who was half-Black.

This lady that is the president of this Asian American group has no
clue what she’s talking about and I am embarrassed as an Asian
American that she says she represents us.

Natasha

The woman you are referring to has a name. It is Vicki Shu Smolin, President of the New York Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans. Considering your diplomatic views on racism and its effects on the Asian American community, it’s safe to say that she doesn’t represent you either.

As an Asian American, I’m more embarrassed that this lady says she represents us.

Thank you.

    Mrs. Vendergrift,

In your emails, you kept expressing the freedom of speech and the importance of humor in defending JV’s racial and sexual slurs. As an educated adult American, you should understand the difference between humor and racial slurs/insults. Yes, people do have the freedom of speech, but they do have to respect others when speak; more important, they must be responsible for their speech. Just like people can’t physically hurt others when they have the freedom of act. As a major radio show, promoting racial and sexual slurs is wrong. Covering it up with the execuse of being humor and freedom of speech is even worse.

In our society, while everyone enjoys the freedom, one must understand the responsibility and obligation behind these freedoms. Abusing freedom will only destory it.

I must tell you calling a lady an “hot spciy asian(white, irish, russian, german, french) ass” is NOT humor. Broadcasting it in public radio is not freedom of speech. It’s a low-life racial slurs. It’s insulting public.

Right is rignt, wrong is wrong. Everyone has the freedom of doing anything, but one must be responsible for his wrong doing. Here, JV is free of speak anything he likes and CBS is free of broadcasting anything it likes, but they are both responsible for any wrong doing. Can we disclose national security matters over the freedom of speeh? Of course, you can. Just like you can kill someone/hurt someone physically, but you have to be responsible for what you do.

Admit the wrong doing and being responsible for that is the only way out here.

As result of freedom of speech, JV can continue saying racial slurs, but everytime, he will be responsible for it.

    -Shan

Why are you ganging up on Natasha? What did she do wrong? Be better looking than you and not marry an Asian man? You’re all incredible racists. If its safe that Vicki Shu etc… doesn’t represent her than stop f***ing with her you f***ing a**holes. btw why is it that all the sudden she calls herself Vicki Shu Smolin on TV? Her email is just vicki_shu@yahoo.com, and she was just known as vicki shu. The same way Carlos Mencia calls himself Carlos instead of Ned to sppease the latin audience Vicki cunt calls herself Vicki Shu Smolin to appease all of you f***ing ignorant dumb motherf***ers. F*** all of you up your f***ing asshole die of AIDS you motherf***ing cunts, you c***suckers you’e just mad at Natasha because she didn’t marry an Asian man and didn’t deal with a 2 inch d*** for the rest of her life f*** you and f*** your ancestors you uneducated snobby elitist C****.

And humpey this is the one of the many problems with your organization. You refuse to call things as they are so you use mind boggling comparisons and try to blame us for this ish. What I said was true. You hate being judged (IE the JV and Elvis asian impersonations you said lump all asians together being a false stereotype) and then you email his wife Natasha accusing her of all this stuff despite her innocence. Quite funny that your post comes right after Lily calling her a h* and that she doesn’t want them, as though she had a choice or controlled all asians. So shut your mouth and realize what f***ing facts are. Natasha is innocent, and I’m going to email her now and tell her you posted her emails without her permission.

Fallout Central has sent repeated death threats to Natasha Yi, and will be dealt with. How can you guys call her a scab. If you don’t like the fact he’s married to an american, then you’re the biggots. That’s more racist than any other fake prank phone call to a friend’s chinese restaurant can ever be.
Also, OCA lawyer Albert Wang, has been hung out to dry by Fallout and the OCA. He started this movement to start a discussion on race relations. No firings were supposed to happen. Vicki Smolin and Fallout took the opportunity to ride the Al Sharpton wave to try and gain some power and publicity. Wang is no longer a member and Vicky betrayed him. She’s a backstabber to her own people. She has no honor. She’s just on a power trip. Also, at the OCA/Fallout protest, the asians were chanting for the wrong side, obviously not even knowing the reason they were there in the first place. This communint propaganda web-site and the OCA will be outed in the news in days to come.Get ready for damage control guys. You’re going to eat your own shit.

I’m going to break it down to you and folks who think like you one time, and one time only. We (Asian-Americans) ARE “real” Americans. Your foundation argument, that some people are allegedly upset with Natasha Yi because she (an Asian-American) married what you term an “American” and use as a placeholder for “Caucasian/White/European-American” only serves to illustrate what a dullard and a racist you are. This IS also our country.

Take a moment to reread Fallout Central’s response to the stock response letter from Natasha Yi’s publicist. Maybe ask someone to explain it to you, slowly.

Geez, there’s a whole lot of unnecessary anger on this site. And I’m not talking about the e-mails, but the comments.

I really don’t think anyone should be judging Natasha, either for her e-mails, for supporting her husband, or least of all, her choice in who she married. Her life, her opinions, and her freedom of speech are all things that she is entitled to, just as well all are in our apparent bashing of her. So maybe she doesn’t believe that her husband’s remarks over public media were inappropriate, but that’s her due right. I don’t think we should gang up on her just because she’s has Asian blood. Being Asian doesn’t necessarily mean you have to unquestioningly proclaim your allegiance to your heritage.

That being said, I do think that people who are under such public limelight should be held accountable to their words to some extent. Yes, there is freedom of speech, but there is a reason why public officials become experts in matters of diplomacy - when wrong things are said, feelings are hurt, and in a country that is still struggling to break free of its past of prejudices and rampant racisms, such blatant denigration needs to be kept in check.

For what it’s worth, you have to admit that Natasha is HOT, especially by American standards. It did surprise me a great deal to learn that one of the hosts responsible for these skits would be married to an Asian. But she clearly does not relate to the outrage. I highly doubt that she or her husband befriend Asian Americans, particularly immigrants, else they would know how hurtful such skits are. She shouldn’t be persecuted for being HOT or defending her non-Asian celebrity husband. Perhaps this may ignite her identity as an Asian American herself which she can openly discuss with her husband.

  19. Jeff said,

    May 15, 2007 at 8:28 pm

I’m an Asian-American and how many of you can say you’ve listened to the Doghouse and have a good idea of who JV and Elvis are or what they stand for?

You Asian-Americans make me sick to my stomach and frankly are an embarassment. So what if someone makes fun of your accent, if it sounds funny, then why shouldn’t someone make fun of it? Is it funny? Maybe, maybe not. Is it wrong? Certainly not.

By showing how intolerant we are of others and the fact that we fly off the handle at every little thing just shows how backwards and foreign we are to American society. So what if someone says you have a small penis? Who really cares? Anyone can say anything about you, does that mean you have to take them seriously? And maybe Asian-American males do have smaller penises on average compared to black males…WHO CARES???

You people seriously need a lesson on the bigger picture. By decrying every little comment, no matter how small or innocuous, that you conceive as racism, you simply dilute the meaning behind opposition to actual harmful and hurtful racism.

You guys are so weak of constitution and spirit that I am not even joking when I say it makes me ill to be classified amongst the same group as you. In conclusion, you might say that I am ‘white-washed’ or I don’t know where my loyalties lie, but I am foreign-born and my loyalty lies with reason and rational thinking, not some mob-mentality group that is super-sensitive to every and any little remark.

If my reasoning hasn’t convinced you, then let me put it this way: sack up and shut up.

Thank you Jeff, for writing something worth reading. AA’s, aka Asian Americans, aka Annoying Activists, are some of the most insecure little people. I’m an ABC, and I just call myself Asian, because aligning myself with all the Asian Americans make me feel racist. If you can make fun of something and find it funny, don’t be racist and not allow someone of another race to make fun of it too. Most Asian Americans have difficulty realizing the difference between a RACIST joke and a RACIAL joke. And if you think there is no difference, please “go back to your own country.”

And please, no more angry Asians chiming in with “I’m a ‘real’ American, just like everybody else,” because with that statement, you are trying to homogenize your race with all other Americans. But that would then make your anger ironic, because one American making fun of another American would no longer be “racist” since you’re all the same.

Lastly, I’m rather angry at most Asian Americans for being so ashamed of themselves. They have got to be the only group that gets mad when people compliment them. I dunno about you, but if I was a girl, I certainly wouldn’t be angry with someone saying that I have a hot, spicy, Asian a**. Do black women get angry when you tell them they have a black booty? Yeah, exactly.

the real reason why jv’s skits are offensive and why natasha’s defense doesn’t work is that such jokes stem from a long and very old tradition of racism, of mocking minorities and treating them as second-class citizens and also as second-class human beings. natasha can play the “lighten up, stop being so serious” card, but she does this because she’s an ignorant person who’s probably more concerned about the status of her nails than the fabric of american culture as it relates to non-caucasian peoples. in short, she’s not sensitive to how degrading and tiring her husband’s comedy is, and treats it as an isolated, individual case which it’s not. she doesn’t see the larger picture.

    Hello,

I’ve lived in Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, and the R.O.K.. All places are loaded with racists who mock whites and blacks whenever they get the chance. In fact, each place has had dozens of lynch mob attacks on blacks and whites for the crime of talking to a local gal.

Here in Korea, I can not remember the last time a 24 hour period of time went by without being verbally assaulted for being a white guy. For the record, I’ve been physically assaulted by GROUPS of locals in all of the Asian countries in which I’ve resided and have the scars to prove it. More, I can not think of even one black or white guy who has not been beaten by a group of Asians after only being in country for a few months for the crime of being of African or European ancestry.

Piss and moan all you want about how racist the U.S. and other Western countries are supposed to be. You know in your heart of hearts that Asian ethnic neighbourhoods in all Western nations are incredibly hostile to whites and blacks and see Western countries as places in which to make a lot of money.

  25. Randy said,

Peter, you are full of it. Whites in Asia are treated VERY well. You can see whites portrayed in billboard ads, in tv commercials, and other types of media in very positive ways. Compare that to the way Asians are portrayed in western media. In many places in Asia, merchants actually give whites preferential treatment out of the belief that most westerners and whites are wealthy.

All of this is besides the point anyways. As Asian Americans, how does the treatment of whites in Asia have to do with ANYTHING?

Does the racism of others excuse JV and Elvis’s racism??? You are trying to create a bullsh*t strawman argument.

I’m an American. I don’t give a flying f*ck what goes on in Asia. If you don’t like it there, then maybe you need to be told what so many of your racist brethren tell minorities in America:

“Go back to where you came from!”

  26. Brian said,

    May 19, 2007 at 6:16 am

Peter, that certainly isn’t the case. In Korean and Japan, learning English is mandatory and children are raised to regard westerners highly.

Unlike the west, Asian countries don’t have a history of
worldwide imperialism/colonialism and exploitation of indigenous peoples.

  27. Mackenzie said,

It’s surprising how many Asian Americans who have replied here are talking shit on people who call out AA racism. I guess they think we should be good, quite model minorities and just take people’s racist hatred up the a**.

If these guys on the radio had made fun of African American speech and talked about eating fried chicken, etc., it would not be okay by anyone’s standards. Yet what Mr. Vandergrift did was the same thing applied to Asians, and here we are debating whether or not it was okay. It was not. Kind of like how it’s not okay to call WNBA players “nappy headed hos”, regardless of whether the guy who said it has lots of “friends of color” or not.

Hate speech against the race of one’s wife and friends is hate speech nonetheless. CBS was right not to tolerate that.

Like stated in Mrs. Yi’s email, there is never a mention of any of the good things that JV & Elvis have done. Here is your example boneheads: Every year they personally put together a toy drive to raise toys for under priviledged children of all races so that they will have a christmas. They have numerous times taken money out of their own pockets and given it to a listener in need, a homeless person, a battered woman……. I could go on forever about the good that the DOGHOUSE (WHATTTTTTTTTTTTT) has done, but all you want to do is look at the bad things in life and keep bringing them up. You guys are the racists here for the hatred that you are showing towards another human being. At least it is meant to be comedy when JV does his thing. What is your excuse? Do some fact checking before you spit your racism.

Natasha Yi embarresses me. She embarresses me as a woman and as an asian american.

Hell, she makes me embarrassed to be the same species as her.

I’ve never met a more deluded and brainwashed person in my life. Is she a product of some cult?

I bet she harbors some major self loathing.
