CBS Radio’s Double Standards — NOT The First Amendment

LesEye
All eyes on you, Leslie

First off, thanks to everyone who showed up to the rally on Friday! The execs and staff at CBS Radio (and the dozen or so JV & Elvis supporters that were also there) heard our message loud and clear, which was:

“Fire JV & Elvis NOW!”

Our webmaster also reports that dozens of individuals from CBS Radio have been logging onto our site for an extended period of time. Hopefully, the overwhelming and detailed evidence on these pages will prompt CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves to make a responsible and timely deicision.

Meanwhile, the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) and other groups will be spending this week contacting Vandergrift and Lay’s array of corporate advertisers. Keep an eye on this site for a list of those companies.

On the subject of Mr. Moonves, we would like everyone to understand that this call to action is not about “The First Amendment” or “free speech” or “censorship” or whatever catchphrase JV & Elvis are trying to use this week to deflect their history of racist and derogatory remarks about Asians.

What this protest is about is CBS Radio’s blatant and absolutely unacceptable double standards when it comes to racially insensitive remarks about Asian Americans.

After the firing of Don Imus, CBS Radio issued the following press release:

CBS today announced its decision to cease broadcasting the Imus in the Morning radio program, effective immediately, on a permanent basis.

“From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship with such class, energy and talent,” said CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves, in announcing the decision. “Those who have spoken with us the last few days represent people of goodwill from all segments of our society – all races, economic groups, men and women alike. In our meetings with concerned groups, there has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society. That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision, as have the many emails, phone calls and personal discussions we have had with our colleagues across the CBS Corporation and our many other constituencies.”

Imus in the Morning was carried on 61 stations across the United States and distributed over the Westwood One radio network. The cancellation of the program comes after statements Mr. Imus made about the young women who comprised the Rutgers University Women’s Basketball team, which reached the finals of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship this spring.

Moonves concluded: “I want to thank all those who came to see us to express their views. We are now presented with a significant opportunity to expand on our record on issues of diversity, race and gender. We intend to seize that opportunity as we move forward together.”

When Mr. Moonves said that he and CBS Radio were being “presented with a significant opportunity to expand on our record on issues of diversity, race and gender”, we, as Asian Americans, assumed that our community was also included in that lofty vision.

FALLOUT CENTRAL hopes that Mr. Moonves is equally “deeply upset and revulsed” by racist remarks like “hot Asian spicy ass”, “you rike fortune cookie?”, “no tickee, no rauree”, and Asians “can’t see”, among many, many others, as he was with “nappy-headed hos”.

Demonstrate social and corporate responsibility and be a man of your word, Mr. Moonves.

EDWARDS STATEMENT ON DEROGATORY RADIO SKIT BY WFNY RADIO HOSTS

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Senator John Edwards released the
following statement condemning the recent radio segment of WFNY radio
hosts Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, which included derogatory comments
directed at women and the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

“The recent radio skit of these two hosts was beyond disgusting. As
individuals and as a nation, we have to condemn this kind of language -
there is just no place for it in our public dialogue.

“This radio skit and Don Imus’ recent comments show that our country is
long overdue for a national dialogue about race, gender, class and what
is acceptable in our public discourse. When we tolerate this kind of
language, we are essentially sowing the seeds of intolerance. All of us
have an obligation to speak out and condemn this kind of language when
it’s used, no matter who uses it. Together, we can change the dialogue
in our nation and more importantly, we can work together to end
inequality.”

Paid for by John Edwards for President.

REP. HONDA EXPRESSES OUTRAGE OVER
92.3 FREE FM RACIST AND SEXIST RADIO SEGMENT

Washington, DC – Congressman Michael Honda (CA-15), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), issued the following statement today regarding a recent segment of CBS Radio’s “The Dog House with JV & Elvis,” that involved a prank call to a Chinese restaurant:

“The prank call made by radio personalities JV and Elvis to a Chinese restaurant perpetuated dangerous sexualized racist stereotypes about Asian Americans and showed insensitivity to the immigrant experience. In the segment, the caller, with a computerized voice, asked the restaurant’s female employee, ‘Should I come to your restaurant so that I can see you naked? . . . That way, I can see your hot Asian spicy *ss.’ He told another employee, ‘I need shrimp flied lice’ and ’some old dung.’ The caller said to this male employee, ‘Chinese man, tell me about your tiny egg roll . . . your tiny egg roll in your pants.’ The radio hosts ended the call with: ‘Tell the hot Asian girl that answered the telephone, I would like to tap her *ss.’

“The segment first aired on April 5 – only one day after Don Imus referred to the Scarlet Knights, the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, as ‘nappy-headed hos.’ What is outrageous is that after CBS rightly fired Don Imus on April 12, the segment was aired again on April 19.

“Currently CBS Radio’s sanction, suspension of the radio co-hosts, is a mere slap on the wrist. Mainstream networks should understand the wide influence they wield, and take responsibility to combat rather than perpetuate racial and sexual stereotypes. I call for an apology by CBS and CBS Radio and the immediate firing of JV and Elvis and the show’s producer.”

PRESS RELEASE: Asian American Justice Center Joins Advocacy Groups to Condemn Insensitive On-Air Remarks on CBS Radio, Call for Firings

Asian American Justice Center Joins Advocacy Groups to Condemn Insensitive On-Air Remarks on CBS Radio, Call for Firings

Washington, D.C. – The Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), a leading national civil and human rights organization, and its affiliates – Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Asian Law Caucus and the Asian American Institute – join advocacy groups nationwide in strongly condemning CBS Radio, demanding a more racially sensitive programming ethos, and calling for the firing of two hosts at WFNY, its New York affiliate, following an inexcusably crude and offensive tirade against Chinese restaurant workers on “The Dog House with JV and Elvis.”
In the six-minute segment, which aired on April 5 – and re-aired on April 19 – shock jocks Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay made a call to a Chinese restaurant in which they ordered “shrimp flied lice,” sexually propositioned a female waitress, and referred to another employee’s body part as a “tiny egg roll.”

“While we welcome the prompt apology from the station and suspension of the two employees, we believe this is far from enough, given the very gratuitous nature of this episode,” said AAJC Deputy Director Vincent A. Eng. “We believe the station should terminate them and their producer, and improve and re-issue guidelines for offensive and discriminatory and objectionable terms.”

Asian Pacific American Legal Center Executive Director Stewart Kwoh added, “In addition to developing guidelines on offensive and discriminatory terms, those involved with radio production must be regularly trained and reminded of such guidelines, and the guidelines should be shared with community groups so that the station is accountable to our community.”

“CBS Radio needs to take steps to ensure that the industry, and its own employees in particular, uphold standards of professionalism that merit their use of the public airwaves,” said Malcolm Yeung, a staff attorney at the Asian Law Caucus. “In granting a license, the federal government requires that radio programming be responsive to community needs. Continuing to employ racist shock jocks violates this criteria.”

“I find it appalling that this kind of outrageous behavior was allowed on the airwaves, and only merits a suspension,” said Tuyet Le, executive director of the Asian American Institute in Chicago. “Radio executives should show greater responsibility by firing these employees.”

The Asian American Justice Center, formerly known as NAPALC, is a national organization dedicated to defending and advancing the civil and human rights of Asian Americans. It works closely with three affiliates – the Asian American Institute of Chicago, the Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco, and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center in Los Angeles – and nearly 100 community partners in 49 cities, 23 states and Washington, D.C.

CALLING ALL JV & ELVIS FAN(S)!!!

Posted in Activism and Empowerment, Racism at 10:26 am by telly_wong

JVElvisFan
Exercising his First Amendment…if not much else

So FALLOUT CENTRAL is taping a new podcast this Sunday and, in celebration of Free Speech and The First Amendment, we’ve decided to allocate a few moments on our show to allow you JV & Elvis supporter(s) to present uncensored arguments on behalf of Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay. You will be given fair time to state your case and defend your idols…or “free speech”, or “comedy”, or whatever lame excuse they’re using this week.

But unlike those cowards, we won’t turn down the volume on your phone and make fun of you behind your back (as they did with New York City Councilman John Liu). Nor will we take the audio from your call and chop it up to create a “fake” prank call (as is the inane claim by Mrs. Vandergrift regarding the dopey duo’s most recent racist and sexist segment — where Asians are once again the butt of the joke.)

So instead of sending us misspelled and grammatically incorrect death threats, drop us a line at comments@falloutcentral.com with your name and a phone number we can reach you at this Sunday (April 29). We will reply back with your assigned time slot.

We’ll reach out and touch you.

Thank you and God Bless America.

RECAP: CBS Radio/JV & Elvis Protest

Posted in Activism and Empowerment, Community Alerts, Racism at 4:22 am by admin

JVElvisAsswipes
Vandergrift: “…I’ve always, you know, been there for people of all different cultures.”

On Friday, FALLOUT CENTRAL stood alongside more than 120 Asian Americans in solidarity to demand the firing of Jeff Vandergrift (”JV”) and Dan Lay (”Elvis”) at the door-steps of CBS headquarters in New York.

We defiantly raised our voices to reinforce:

  1. That Jeff Vandergrift (”JV”) and Dan Lay (”Elvis”) should be FIRED!
  2. That this protest is not about a single prank call, but it is about Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay’s HISTORY of humiliating and denigrating Asians and Asian Americans on their radio show, “The Dog House”. Click on this link, this link , and this link to listen for yourself.
  3. That being married to a woman of Asian descent does not give Jeff Vandergrift a license to humiliate and denigrate the people of her race. In fact, it just further demonstrates how little respect he has for our culture and heritage, and most importantly, it demonstrates how little repsect he has for his own wife.
  4. We fully support free speech but not racist hate speech made over public airwaves. CBS Radio must fire them for a history of racist and derogatory remarks made about Asians, just as they terminated Don Imus for a racially insenstive remark about African Americans.

The protestors held signs which read:

There were about 50 passer byers who approached the mass of protesters with eager curiosity throughout the rally. All of them stopped to read our hand-outs (summarizing information detailed on FALLOUT CENTRAL), and discussed the remarks in question. Virtually all of them, with a few exceptions, stood on our side of the picket fence in agreement with the thorough and detailed evidence we presented. This was a definitive indication of the positive momentum we’ve gained throughout this important demonstration.

Oh yeah, there was also a small special interest group (of about 12 people) behind a separate police barricade 15 feet away from ours supporting racist radio. They referred to us Asian American protestors as “Communists”.

Racist broadcast by 92.3 FM : An insult to Asian Americans

Posted in Community Alerts, Racism at 4:10 am by admin

download On 4/5/07, WFNY 92.3FM (CBS Radio) aired a segment that is an insult to Asian Americans.

The 10 students who beat up a 17 year old Filipino girl because she “looked Chinese” would have found this radio broadcast hillarious, as would the men who committed these equally anti-Asian cold-blooded hate crimes.

Call Karen Mateo of CBS and demand that JV & Elvis, the hosts of this show, are terminated from employment. Feel free to cite this quote from the CBS Business Conduct Statement, Section VI listed on the corporate web page:
