‘Asian Kings of Comedy’ go Hawaiian
The Asian Kings of Comedy — Shecky Wong, Paul Ogata, Kevin Shea and Edwin San Juan — talk to The Honolulu Advertiser about their tour of the Hawaiian islands and other fun stuff.
On the subject of joining forces with the other Kings, comedy veteran Wong (sometimes called the “godfather of Asian comedy”) says, “In all my years doing the comedy-club scene in New York City, I rarely saw Asian faces in the crowd. So if they won’t come to us, (we) go to them.”
Ogata, named Funniest Asian American Comedian by the TakeOut Comedy Competition, adds, “It opens doors … it opens people’s eyes to the world of Asian American comedians.”
For those in Hawaii, the Kings play Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater tonight at 7:30, and Ogata plays the Pearl City Cultural Center on Oahu tomorrow at 6 p.m. in a benefit for Na Keiki O Manana chorus. For more information, write the chorus at nakeiki_omanana@yahoo.com.
